Ola to Make Wi-Fi Facility Available Across Categories Soon
Transportation app Ola will soon extend Wi-Fi services to users across segments including Micro, Mini and even autorickshaws.
The Bengaluru-based firm currently offers in-car Wi-Fi services to users of its Prime category.
Ola on Thursday announced the launch of Ola Wi-Fi that will allow users to auto connect to Internet in an Ola cab without having to enter credentials every single time.
"Users with a one-time authentication on their phones, can use Ola Wi-Fi on their devices without having to key in login credentials and passwords in subsequent rides, staying connected with Ola's secure network whenever they take a ride," Ola Head of Categories and Chief Marketing Officer Raghuvesh Sarup told PTI.
He added that Auto-Connect Wi-Fi is currently available for free on Ola Prime and "will soon be available across all categories including Micro, Mini and Auto-rickshaws available on the Ola app".
He however declined to comment on the timeline or investment details for the initiative.
The company charges a base fare of Rs. 100 (first 4 kms) and then Rs. 10 per km in Delhi for its Prime category cars that offer in-car access to Internet. For Mini, users pay Rs. 8 per km, while the base fare remains same as that for Prime.
"Ola Wi-Fi addresses the need for consumers to be connected to the Internet while on the go, without the hassles of having to use unique credentials every single time," Sarup said.
He added that over 200TB of data was consumed on a monthly basis by users of Ola Prime, which made available high speed Wi-Fi in-cab with a standard authentication process.
In the past, Ola has enabled 2G optimisation, made over nine local languages available and enabled turn-by-turn navigation features for driver-partners through its app.

Microsoft Edge Browser to Get Built-In Ad-Blocking Features

Microsoft Edge Browser to Get Built-In Ad-Blocking Features
Microsoft plans to offer Windows 10 users the ability to block ads in Microsoft Edge. Talking about Microsoft Edge, at its developer conference Build 2016, the Redmond, Washington-based company unveiled the features roadmap it has set for its new Web browser.
According to a session titled "Microsoft Edge: What's Next for Microsoft's New Browser and Web Platform", held on stage on the first day of Build 2016, the company plans to bring "ad blocking features into the browser" in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update later this year - also known asWindows 10 Redstone.
Microsoft says ad-blocking is a feature request from users. Other such requests include support for extensions, which to no one's surprise is on the top of the list. Support for extensions, or "modern extension/plugin model and extension/plugin store for Edge" as Microsoft describes it, will also be available to regular Windows 10 users with the Anniversary Update, which is expected to rollout around June or July.
Speaking of extensions, Microsoft recently enabled this feature in a preview build of Windows 10 for Insiders. As of now, there aren't many extensions available to play with. Interestingly enough, Adblock Plus noted earlier this month that it has built an add-on for Edge, and is only awaiting Microsoft's approval.
This is the first time Microsoft has confirmed that it will be adding ad-blocking capability to its Web browser. While such tools have existed for over a decade, it was only a few months ago that the controversies surrounding this tool was at the spotlight. Apple last year introduced this capability iniOS 9. Since then we have also seen Samsung allowing ad-blocking on its Internet browser on Galaxy smartphones.
According to estimates, ad-blocking tools are costing advertisers, and by extension, publishers, million of dollars every year.

Microsoft Partners With Canonical to Bring Bash to Windows 10

Microsoft Partners With Canonical to Bring Bash to Windows 10
Microsoft is adding support for Bash Unix shell and programming language to Windows. At its developer conference Build 2016 on Wednesday, the company announced that its developers on Windows 10 will now be able to utilise Linux's popular command line with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which is scheduled to release for free of charge to Windows 10 users in the next few months.
If you're not a developer this major announcement, unfortunately, means almost nothing to you. But if you're a Web developer and your favoured platform is Windows, this new functionality can make a number of things more convenient for you. Next time you come across an open source command-line utility - the one that begins with "$" - you will no longer have to resort to Linux to try it out.
As previously rumoured, at the day one of Build 2016, Microsoft announced that users can now run Bash on Ubuntu on Windows. In the simplest words, this means that you will be able to run native user-mode Linux shells and command-line tools - no porting, no changes required - on Windows.
Do note that this isn't Bash or Ubuntu running in a virtual machine (VM), a suite that allows you to run an operating system atop another operating system as an application. Instead, Microsoft is bringing native Bash Linux binary to Windows. This will facilitate "real" Linux environment, Microsoft insists. Which means, you will be able to download apps using "apt-get" on Windows, as you do on Linux.
To summarise, as we know this news must be overwhelming to many, unlike utilities like Cygwin, a GNU command line tool that complies for Win32 with great native Windows integration, or HyperV and Ubuntu, a Linux VM, what you're getting here is an environment that supposedly behaves like real Linux. And that is because it executes real Linux binaries.
In a blog post, Microsoft sheds some light into how it brought along all these changes, "We built new infrastructure within Windows - the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) - upon which we run a genuine Ubuntu user-mode image provided by our great partners over at Canonical, creators of Ubuntu Linux."

9 Famous Attractions of Dubai

The only word that can capture the essence of Dubai, is glamorous. Full of glitz, luxury, and an overarching landscape that spells wealth and niche lifestyle - this city is also known for excellent shopping, ultramodern architecture, and a very lively nightlife scene. The capital city of United Arab Emirates is a tourist's paradise that provides you with unique experiences that span across fine dining, adventure sports, family fun, and endless endless shopping opportunities.

If you are planning a trip to the city, be sure to catch these 9 places for a better time.

Dubai Creek

This is perhaps the most charming way to explore how traditional Dubai has transitioned into a more modern space. The Creek flows between Bur Dubai and Deira which was the inaugural point where international trade began first. Dubai Creek cuts through the heart of Dubai and is one of the most picturesque locales that exude old world charm. The best way to go through this beautiful part of the city? Take a traditional abra, which is essentially a water taxi that makes the exploration both fun and quaint.

Burj Khalifa

This one has successfully redefined how we look at skyscrapers, and high rises. Burj Khalifa is the tallest man-made structure in the world standing tall at 828 meters in Downtown Dubai. A mélange of both traditional architecture and modern technology, it is definitely one of the most exquisite sights Dubai has to offer, and that makes it something no tourist wants to miss. Sure, you may not easily be able to afford the Burj Khalifa as a residence, but you can definitely enjoy the dining experiences it has to offer in terms of dining and sightseeing. And that's actually good enough.

Cayan Tower

Who says twisted things can't be appealing? The Cayan Tower, for example, is an architectural and design marvel! It is not only the world's tallest twisted tower, but also one of the most inventive apartment buildings that there can be. It is located by the beautiful Dubai waterfront, with stunning views of the Dubai Marina and Arabian Gulf.

Souq Madinat

Madinat Jumeirah is a magnificently romantic place. It's when conventions come together in a contemporary pattern and create something beautiful. Souq Madinat is an authentic re-creation of an ancient marketplace that offers a shopping experience, or even a cultural experience like no other. Souk Madinat Jumeirah is a maze-like development which offers some reproduced and some affected artefacts. It is easily one of the stops that you must hit while in Dubai.

Burj Al Arab

The distinctive sail-shaped Burj Al Arab Jumeirah defines luxury. The surreal hotel, which is also the world's third tallest, stands separately on an artificial island and is joined with the mainland through a private bridge. And we all know, if something is "members-only", it has got to be a tell-tale of wealth. Sadly one can't really enter the hotel unless have booked a room or have a reservation at their glorious and most expensive eateries. So maybe save up some extra for your trip, and enjoy extravagance in its core essence.

Miracle Garden

Dubai specializes in delivering the unexpected. Miracle Garden, as the name suggests, is no less than a miracle in itself. There are multi-hued flowers landscaped in a way that will sure make you feel as in you are in a paradise. It contains over 45 million flowers over a 72,000 sq meter site and, as well as some traditional flowerbeds. This also hosts a round shaped 3D Butterfly Garden where nine beautifully designed domes will be filled with countless species of flamboyant butterflies. We spy so many photo-ops at this beautiful place, we can't wait to visit (with or without a selfie stick)

Al Fahidi Art Gallery Al Majlis

In the otherwise over-the-top indulgence that Dubai offers, it also offers a haven for art lovers. The Majlis gallery has been a premiere art center for the city since 1989. Bringing prominence to both local and national art, this art gallery has also hosted several exhibitions displaying the works of artists of elevated international standing. It's quite the hidden gem and worth every bit of the accolades it has received.

Dubai Mall

The world's second largest shopping mall, The Dubai Mall, holds about 1200 shops. From the most high end couture houses, to the best high-street brands, this place will leave you with a serious burnt hole in your pocket! The mall also boasts tons of fun activities for some family hangouts, like an indoor theme park and the world's largest aquarium, which sits right inside the
mall.

Palm and World Islands

Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Alia and Deira Islands are the three planned Palm Islands which are visible from space to the naked eye. These connected islands collectively look like a palm tree and that's splendidly exquisite! And if you are feeling extra audacious, or make that extra extra audacious you can even buy the Islands and basically just retire. Because once you own the eighth wonder of the world, as these islands have been nicknamed, you really should let go off everything else and enjoy this grandeur.

Gionee W909 Flip Phone With Dual Touchscreens, Fingerprint Sensor Launched

Gionee W909 Flip Phone With Dual Touchscreens, Fingerprint Sensor Launched
As expected, Gionee on Tuesday launched its W909 clamshell Android smartphone in China. Priced at CNY 3,999 (roughly Rs. 41,000), the handset is already up for pre-orders in the country. Its availability details outside China have not yet been mentioned.
It is worth mentioning that the Gionee W909 is also arguably one of the first flip phones in the market to come with a fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C port, and dual touchscreens as well. It sports a metal build and houses some high-end specifications under-the-hood.
The Gionee W909 runs Android 5.1 Lollipop and supports dual-SIM functionality. It includes two 4.2-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) resolution IPS display, with the outer display featuring a 2.5D glass. The smartphone is powered by an octa-core MediaTek MT6755M processor, clubbed with 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM.
The smartphone bears 64GB of inbuilt storage, of which 52GB is user-accessible. The built-in storage can be expanded via microSD card (up to 128GB). The Gionee W909 bears a 16-megapixel rear camera with phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and LED flash, along with a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.

On the connectivity front, the flip phone supports 4G LTE networks, along with Bluetooth v4.0, GPS, Wi-Fi, and USB Type-C connectivity. Backed by a 2530mAh battery, the W909 on paper can deliver up to 29.7 hours of talk time and 408 hours of standby time. It measures 124.1x62.8x16.5mm, weighs 207 grams, and features a fingerprint sensor at the back that can unlock the handset in 0.38 seconds.
Since the Gionee W909 carries a flip phone design, it also has T9 keypad with physical buttons to navigate, launch the camera and more, besides having an on-screen keyboard. It is only available in Rose Gold colour variant.
The last flip phone by a popular tech brand was seen by Samsung in November last year as itlaunched the W2016 smartphone in China. The Android-based dual-SIM smartphone features two 3.9-inch Super Amoled touchscreens, both with WXGA (768x1280 pixels) resolution. Although it sports nearly the same innards as the Gionee W909, it lags behind in terms of battery and RAM. It also misses out on a fingerprint sensor and USB Type-C connectivity.
LG too last year launched its flip phone, the Wine Smart but with less-powerful specifications.

Voot Video-on-Demand Service Launched in India

Voot Video-on-Demand Service Launched in India
Media and entertainment major Viacom18 Tuesday launched its advertising-led video-on-demand platform Voot.
Voot, a 50:50 joint venture between Viacom Group and the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries, will have a large repository of original content and roll out shows in both long and short formats across genres like comedy and drama.
The platform will have kids characters from across networks, from Nick characters like Dora, Spongebob, Motu Patlu to external popular characters like Chhota Bheem and Pokémon.
It will also move its content library including Colors, MTV and Nick to be digitally available only on Voot.
"This market is at the cusp of a digital boom with over 400 million Internet users and over 200 million smartphone users spending significant amount of time online with entertainment and allied content being the prime driver," Viacom18 Group Chief Executive Sudhanshu Vats said.
"As more people move towards consuming content online, it is time for Viacom18 to move into the world of connected screens, hence Voot," Vats added.
Voot will be among the dozen or so similar services such as Hotstar, Sony Liv, Ozee, ErosNow, Spuul and YuppTV, already operational in the country.
With the digital advertising led video-on-demand category set to develop into around $1 billion (roughly Rs. 6,640 crores) business opportunity by 2020, Viacom 18 has lined up an aggressive mix of business content and marketing strategies.
"From a business standpoint, we are following the advertising led video-on-demand model. As the market matures in the next 12-24 months, we will be evaluating both freemium and subscription led models," Viacom18 Digital Ventures Chief Operating Officer Gaurav Gandhi said.
Voot will have over 17,000 hours of content across languages and genres and comes with pin protection to ensure children don't watch anything except the kids content. It also has a shake feature.
Once a child shakes the phone, the screen displays the next four videos on the list, which can be accessed simply by tapping on it. It will launch four original web series and then look at having an original content show every month.

Nintendo's First Smartphone App Miitomo to Hit the US on Thursday

Nintendo's First Smartphone App Miitomo to Hit the US on Thursday
Japan-based video game giant Nintendo has announced to launch Miitomo - its first ever app that lets users create a cartoon-like character that plays games and socialises with other players - in the US on Thursday.
Currently available in Japan, Miitomo will be available first in the US and then in countries like Canada, Britain, France and Russia, among others.
The smartphone application lets users create avatars called "Miis" and customise them with different hairstyles, facial features, outfits, accessories and more.
A user can even give "Mii" a nickname, customise how it speaks and choose its personality. Moreover, a "Mii" can be created using a photo taken from smartphone's camera.
The "Miis" represent a user's gaming profile and are social. An in-game shop lets a user buy more items for Mii like new outfits to wear.
For this purchase, the user has to pay with "Miitomo" coins which can either be bought or won through game play.
The app asks users "get to know you"-type questions, like "Where did you go last weekend?" or "What TV show are you watching?" or "What was your most recent purchase," for example. After you have answered some questions, your Mii ventures out into the game's world, meets up with other Miis, and exchanges answers, the report said.
Beyond chatting the Miis can be placed into photos, which can be customised and shared on social media. In addition to the social aspect, Miitomo includes a mini-game called Miitomo Drop.
Miitomo is available on both Android and iOS platforms.

Xiaomi Announces 'Mi Ecosystem' Sub-Brand

Xiaomi Announces 'Mi Ecosystem' Sub-Brand
At an event in China, Xiaomi on Tuesday announced a new sub-brand called Mi Ecosystem. The new brand is meant to cover products manufactured by Xiaomi's ecosystem partners.
As per Xiaomi, the Mi Ecosystem sub-brand will adhere to the "philosophy of making products that stand out as works of art in daily lives." It adds that its ecosystem partners are chosen because they adhere to the "high-quality" required to be aligned with Xiaomi.
Xiaomi said that to build the Mi Ecosystem, it has thus far invested in 55 companies that design and manufacture products beyond the company's own three core product categories: smartphones, smart TVs, and smart routers. It added that 29 of these companies have in fact been incubated by Xiaomi since their founding, including Zhimi (responsible for the Mi Air Purifier) and Viomi (responsible for the Mi Water Purifier).
The company added that so far, 28 Mi Ecosystem companies have won international design awards, while 20 companies have launched products. The companies have also become "industry benchmarks" in their own right, with spectacular sales figures for such startups - no doubt helped by the Xiaomi brand. It said that seven Mi Ecosystem companies already have annual sales of over $100 million, while two have reached annual sales of over $1 billion.
Xiaomi in a statement added that its Founder and CEO, Lei Jun, started exploring the ecosystem business model two years ago with the aim to "promote an upgrade in Chinese manufacturing with a new concept of 'Made in China' products." The statement adds, "Rather than simply being a venture company, Xiaomi imparts to these companies its approach to making quality products, sharing its methodologies and existing resources, including supply chain, e-commerce, marketing, and branding."

The first product under the Mi Ecosystem brand is the Mi Induction Heating Pressure Rice Cooker (seen above). Priced at CNY 999 (roughly Rs. 10,200), the rice cooker is supposedly 40 percent cheaper than its Japanese counterparts, the company says. It will go on sale in China via Mi.com during the Mi Fan Festival beginning April 6.
As you'd expect from Xiaomi, the Mi Induction Heating Pressure Rice Cooker is an Internet-connected device, and not just a 'dumb' pressure cooker. The Wi-Fi-enabled cooker can be controlled via the Mi Home app. Xiaomi says users can scan a packet of rice to identify the type of rice, brand, and origin, and depending on these factors, the rice cooker will adjust its heating to best suit the rice type. The company says it currently supports more than 200 brands of rice, a list that will be expanded in the future. The Mi Home app also provides recipes for dishes that can be made with Mi Induction Heating Pressure Rice Cooker, including cakes, and users simply have to select the recipe in the app for the cooker to adjust itself.
What began as a software company five years ago, Xiaomi has grown to become a major manufacturer of smartphones, tablets, as well as TVs. The company now sells products such as suitcases, air purifiersLED lightsroutersset-top boxes, and even lamps under its brand. The vast majority of these products, however, don't leave China's boundaries. In recent years, Xiaomi has been working with different governments such as India, Singapore and their regulations to launch more of its products, while also working on its debut in the United States and United Kingdom markets.
