Holi 2016: 15 Expert Skin Care Tips for The Festival of Colours
Here are 15 quick skin care tips for playing Holi this Thursday, 24th March 2016.
With Holi just around the corner, we’re sure your mind is preoccupied with thoughts of mouth-watering gujiya and malpua, water balloon fights and a whole lot of colour. But did you know that Holi was traditionally played with natural colours made from flowers and herbs? With time however, these natural ingredients have been replaced with dyes, chemicals and also heavy metals such as acids, mica, glass powder, and dangerous alkalis. These toxins can lead toskin allergies, irritation leading to chronic skin eczemas, amyloidosis, even serious injuries upon scratching.
Here are 10 tips to protect your skin before playing Holi:
1. Since dry skin easily allows chemicals to penetrate the body, always apply coconut oil(preferably) on your entire body and apply mustard oil on your hair, at least an hour before playing. Note: It is very important to oil between fingertips, near fingernails and behind the ear.
2. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen after oiling your body, and make sure it is gel based, waterproof and of SPF 25. If you’re in the sun for more than 3 hours, remember to re-apply the sunscreen.
3. Apply a thick coat of dark nail paint, preferable the darkest colour possible, and remove it after playing Holi.
4. Wear glasses or sunglasses while playing Holi to protect your eyes.
5. Always wash your eyes with cold water. In case irritation persists even a few hours after playing Holi, contact an eye specialist.
6. If you already have an open wound or cut on your body before Holi, do use a band-aid so as to avoid the entry and absorption of any harmful chemicals.
7. Hurt yourself while playing Holi? Immediately wash that particular area and put ice on it. Clean with an antibacterial lotion to avoid absorption of chemicals, and get a tetanus injection in case you haven’t taken one in the last 4-5 months.
8. Since it is difficult to tell the difference between natural colours and dye colours, it is necessary to take precautions. Either buy herbal colours, or else make colours at home from flowers such as tesu or genda, even beetroot juice. Request your guests to bring only herbal colours as well.
9. Make sure you don’t stay in wet clothes for any longer than two hours. If you’re playing dryHoli (which is definitely better), try to keep washing your face and hands regularly. And if you’re hosting the party, then apply curd on each other’s face so the colour fades away and the skin gets moisturized too.
10. Drink clean water throughout to stay hydrated.
When you’re done playing and all the festivities are over, it is quite a task to get all that colour off. Here are 5 easy tips to take care of your skin after playing Holi:
1. Stand in running water for 5-10 minutes after playing Holi, and ensure that you do not scrub or scratch aggressively.
2. Apply liquid soap gently on the body. Still struggling? You can try home remedies thereafter, such as applying a mix of lemon juice, curd and sandalwood. You can also apply a mix of turmeric and white flour, and wash off after 15-20 minutes with unboiled milk. The trick with white flour works wonders for the face.
3. Dab some olive oil on a cotton pad to clean your face and wash with cold water.
4. Be careful not to use body scrubs, exfoliators or bath salts for at least 48 hours afterplaying Holi, and try not to go out in the sun for too long. Also, do not opt for sauna or steam for 3 days.
5. You can get a skin facial done after two days, provided it is minus the bleach, chemicals and steam.
