Cancel Train Ticket by Dialling 139: How It Works

Cancel Train Ticket by Dialling 139: How It Works

TL;DR

  • Dial 139 and give details of the ticket that needs to be cancelled.
  • You will get a one-time password (OTP).
  • Reach the reservation counter and reveal the OTP to claim refund.
Now railway passengers can cancel their confirmed train tickets by just dialling 139.
The passenger has to dial 139 giving details of the confirmed ticket for cancelling it and you will get a one-time password (OTP). Passenger has to reach the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter and reveal the OTP to claim refund.
Besides 139, one can also cancel confirmed tickets using IRCTC website also and both the facilities were made operational from Friday.
This is an attempt on our part to provide relief to passengers for cancellation of tickets, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said in New Delhi after launching both the services.
He said both the initiatives were promised in the Railway Budget 2016-17 which were now fulfilled.
After the change in refund rules, a lot of passengers were finding it difficult to reach counters to cancel the reserved tickets within the stipulated time and as a result they are losing money.
According to the new refund rules, railways has doubled the ticket cancellation charge with the aim of helping genuine passengers get confirmed tickets.
Prabhu said railways has its own challenges for carrying out expansion programme.
"We have to expand the railway infrastructure for which fund is required. We have to increase the income for this and all these have to be carried out in a transparent manner. It is a challenging task," he said.
Railways has to changed the software accordingly for the cancellation through IRCTC website and 139.
Coming to the aid of harried passengers, railways launched the cancellation facility through 139 and IRCTC site so that one does not have to rush to the counter to cancel confirmed tickets.

Smarteefi Wi-Fi Smart Power Strip Review

Smarteefi Wi-Fi Smart Power Strip Review
At first glance, the Smarteefi SE315A Power Strip looks like any other spike buster, which is an under-appreciated but essential part of every PC user's life. The average techie probably needs one in every room to have enough outlets for a smartphone, laptop, PC, router, etc. The Smarteefi, manufactured by Delhi-based startup CoreEmbedded Technologies, is an entry-level home automation solution which lets users remotely toggle power to three plug points, while implementing conventional surge protection features.
A Wi-Fi router and a live Internet connection are necessary for the device, which lets users control appliances plugged in to it through an Android app or a Web dashboard on the Smarteefi website. It should take about ten minutes to set up the power strip. The manual details step-by-step instructions concisely, and practically anyone with basic tech knowledge should be able set this up.
In a gist, you need to activate a setup mode on the power strip after turning it on, following which it shows up as a Wi-Fi access point. You then log in into the device through a Web browser (using the default IP 192.168.4.1), and enter the Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password of your existing Wi-Fi network. Hit save and toggle back to normal mode, after which the Smarteefi SE315A should be connected to your router, making it accessible from your other computing devices and anywhere else through the Internet.
Once the LED indicator shows a stable green, each plug on the power strip can be controlled remotely. We managed to nail the setup process on the first try and don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to do so too. Once configured, it takes less than a second to turn a device off or on through the app, or Web interface.
The Smarteefi SE315A is 13 inches long; size of a standard power strip but about 10 percent thicker and with one less socket than a regular spike buster. The unit has slots on the back to enable wall mounting. It consumes 0.45W of power in standby, which is up to four times the power consumption of a typical smartphone in sleep mode.
The company says that it takes security seriously. Communication from the Smarteefi SE315A to and from its cloud service is encrypted using 128-bit AES, and communication between the cloud and the app is encrypted using SSL.
smarteefi_app_body.jpg
Configuring the app takes a few minutes, starting with registration, following which users can add their Smarteefi power strip by entering its serial number and activation code, which are printed on the bottom of the unit.
LED indicators on the power strip show which mode it is in - if it's blue, the power strip is in setup mode; if it's blinking green, the power strip is too far away from the router or there's a password issue. Red denotes that the strip has trouble connecting to the cloud. The board also has physical switches for each of the power outlets, which emit a blue LED light when turned on.
The Smarteefi Android app is minimal but effective. It offers no bells and whistles apart from scheduling, which can be used to turn power to any of the three universal outlets on or off on a daily or weekly schedule. Scheduled events on the app aren't synced with the cloud, which means that your Android device needs to be online with the app running in the background at the scheduled time, in order to send commands. On the other hand, you do get notifications when scheduled events are carried out successfully or if they fail. The app doesn't have features like IFTTT integration, though the company is working on a way to send push notifications to your phone when the physical switches on the power strip are used.
You can also control your Smarteefi power strip through any device that supports a Web browser, through this interface lacks the ability to create schedules. There's no app for iOS devices yet, but it's on the company's to-do list, with a planned launch date of June 2016.
CoreEmbedded Technologies has decided to go with only three sockets, which seems like a limitation at this point - a four- or six-socket model would have been more appealing. The company says that it wanted the product to look and feel just like a standard power strip, which dictated its final dimensions. Vipin Galhaut, CEO of the firm, told Gadgets 360 that he has received orders from industries for similar power strips with eight sockets, and he sees no reason to turn customers away. Versions with more sockets are in the pipeline, but the next product is going to be a controller that can fit behind an existing switchboard, he said.
Three plug points are still enough to automate simple activities - plug in a coffee maker, toaster oven and kettle, and you can have a full breakfast ready for you as you wake up. The Smarteefi SE315A can support a total power draw of up to 5 Amperes before its over-current safety protection is triggered, so you could plug multiple small devices into each socket if you want them all on or off at the same time.
smarteefi_powerstrip_size_comparison_gadgets_360.jpg
Users can have any number of these connected power strips in their homes, all controlled individually through the same interface. If you have an inverter at home, the Smarteefi SE315A can help you reduce load by turning off devices that you don't need to run on batteries. The ability to turn off a TV, PC or game console remotely could be of use to parents (though any kid should be able to find a simple workaround - just flip the switch to setup mode, and the device is cut off from your router, disabling remote access).
The Smarteefi SE315A can't be operated without an Internet connection, since all commands are routed through the cloud. Any ISP downtime or power failure will interrupt your ability to use it, which could be dangerous in cases where you need to turn something off at a particular time. Its lifecycle is also dependent on the company that manufactures it. For example, Revolv, a US-based IoT player which was acquired by Google, will stop supporting its devices, rendering them inoperable after May 15, 2016. Galhaut told Gadgets 360 that his three-year-old company is in this space for the long haul, with more devices in the pipeline. Its cloud service has an uptime of 99.9 percent, barring scheduled upgrades for major releases, he said.
The Smarteefi's SE315A's use cases are limited when compared to the Inoho's 5.1 home controller, priced at Rs. 11,999, which sits behind a switchboard and can be used to control electrical fittings and regulate fan speed as well. That's the space the company is looking to set target next. For now the Smarteefi SE315A complements such a solution by Internet-enabling appliances that need a plug point.
The Smart EEFI SE315A Power Strip is affordable, though much more expensive than ordinary power strips. It's intriguing for anyone looking to add some basic task automation to their day, and is something that every broadband-using geek would love. It could also be useful for the elderly and anyone with impaired mobility. Add a couple of multi-plug adapters, and its three sockets won't feel so limiting. However, it should be used only for convenience, not for any appliance or product that could be dangerous if you suddenly lose the ability to turn it on or off when you need to.
Price: Rs. 2,499
Pros
-Entry-level home automation at an affordable price
-Easy to set up and use

  • It comes in full-HD, QHD display options and Intel Core M SoCs.
  • Its dual audio speakers are powered by Band & Olufsen Play tech.
HP has released several Chromebooks till date, and it seems the venerable PC maker has no intentions to stop just yet. It is listed on HP's US website, and is said to go on sale this month.
Looking at the Chromebook 13 G1's design, which boasts of a brushed anodised aluminium body along with the HP's glossy iconic logo, it's hard not to see the similarities with Apple's 12-inch MacBook. It even bears USB Type-C ports, and no Ethernet port. It weighs in at 1.29 kgs, and measures 319.9x219.6x12.9mm, which is thinner than the 13.1mm Apple MacBook - the MacBook is lighter however, at 0.92 kgs.
HP claims the business-ready laptop is 'ultra-thin' and features several security apps to protect sensitive data. It's also claimed to have the "first docking solution for a Chromebook", which enables the laptop to power dual-HD displays, access wired networks, and more conveniently charge devices with the increased number of USB Type-C ports the optional HP Elite USB-C Docking Station offers.

One of the highlights of the Chromebook is that its dual audio speakers are powered by Band & Olufsen Play tech. Some of the free accessories buyers will be receiving along with the Chromebook 13 G1 are HP Elite USB-C Docking Station, HP Slim Ultrabook professional top load case, USB Type-C to HDMI adapter, USB Type-C to VGA adapter, and USB Type-C to USB 3.0 and DP adapter.
As mentioned above, the base model comes at $499 (roughly Rs. 33,200), while based on processor, RAM, and display it also comes in $599 (roughly Rs. 39,800), $819 (roughly Rs. 54,400) and $1,029 (roughly Rs. 68,400) variants.

  • The HTC One S9 is listed on the company's Germany website.
  • The smartphone looks like the One M9 and is priced at EUR 449.
  • HTC One S9's availability details are not yet known.
HTC this year with the launch of its HTC 10 smartphone appeared set to ditch the 'One' moniker it has been using for its last three flagships. However, the Taiwanese company appears to be keeping the 'One' series alive for mid-range smartphones by introducing theHTC One S9. The new metal-clad smartphone is listed for EUR 499 (roughly Rs. 33,700) on the company's Germany website without any availability details.
Talking about the design, the HTC One S9 features nearly the same design as last year's One M9. While the back panel looks similar, there is a slight change at the front. The One S9 now features two speaker slits instead of the grille seen on the One M9. The front-facing camera and sensor placement remains the same.

Sony Cyber-Shot RX10 III Super-Zoom Camera Launched at Rs. 1,14,990

Sony Cyber-Shot RX10 III Super-Zoom Camera Launched at Rs. 1,14,990

TL;DR

  • The Cyber-shot RX10 III eatures a 25x optical zoom (24-600mm).
  • It has a 20.1-mgeapixel CMOS sensor and Bionz X image processor.
  • The super-zoom camera will be available from Friday.
After recently launching the A6300 mirrorless camera in India, Sony has launched the Cyber-Shot RX10 III super-zoom camera at a price of Rs. 1,14,990. The company announced this model a month ago for the US market and you'll now be able to pick one up in India, when it goes on sale from Friday.

The Sony Cyber-shot RX10 III features a 20.1-megapixel stacked CMOS sensor and is powered by Sony's Bionz X image processor. The main highlight however is the new 24-600mm zoom lens (Vario-Sonnar T 24-600mm F2.4 - F4) which provides 25x optical zoom. The extended zoom lens features a total of 8 ED glass elements to minimise chromatic aberration and enhance picture quality.

The ISO sensitivity range on the Sony Cyber-shot RX10 III is 64-12,800 while the burst mode tops out at 14fps. The latter is possible thanks to a speedy DRAM chip placed at the rear of the sensor which is able to process large amounts of data very quickly. Due to this, the RX10 III can shoot super slow-motion video footage at 240fps, 480fps, and an incredible 960fps.

The new camera also adds several improvements to the body compared to its predecessors. You now have triple lens rings for precise adjustment of the focus, zoom, and aperture. The hand-grip has also been modified for better stability and a dedicated button to lock the focus. You also get 4K video recording support, an Oled electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 2.35 million dots, dust and water resistance, as well as wireless connectivity in the form of Wi-Fi and NFC.

Income Tax Department To Pay Interest On Delayed TDS Refund

TDS is primarily deducted by the employer from the salary paid to an employee.
TDS is primarily deducted by the employer from the salary paid to an employee.
New Delhi: TheIncome Tax Department will now add interest to delayed refunds made against excess TDS (tax deducted at source) deductions and will also not litigate with the deductor on this issue in the future.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued a directive in this regard to the assessing officers of the Income Tax Department based on a 2014 Supreme Court order where the apex court had made it clear that the taxman is "bound" to pay interest on refund made under the TDS category.

TDS is primarily deducted by the employer from the salary paid to an employee.

"In view of the judgement of the apex court it is settled that if a resident deductor is entitled for the refund of tax deposited under Section 195 (other sums) of the Act (Income Tax Act), then it has to be refunded with interest under section 244A (where refund of any amount a becomes due to the assessee they shall be entitled to receive simple interest), from the date of payment of such tax," said the CBDT communication issued on Tuesday.

CBDT has further directed that "accordingly, it is advised that no appeals may henceforth be filed on this ground by the officers of the department and appeals already filed on this issue may not be pressed upon".

The clarification has been issued by the apex policy-making body (CBDT) of the Income Tax Department as it has been a subject matter of "controversy and litigation".

"While the tax department duly gives interest in case an individual's refund is delayed, there was some grey area in the TDS category. This has been settled now. This is yet another area where the taxman is cutting down on litigation," a senior I-T official said.

The basis of the latest communication is a Supreme Court order that had ruled in favour of the deductor of a company on February 26, 2014 stating that "refund due and payable to assessee is debt-owned and payable by the Revenue".

"The government, there being no express statutory provisions for payment of interest on the refund of excess amount/tax collected by the Revenue cannot shrug of its apparent obligation to reimburse the deductors lawful monies with the accrued interest for the period of undue retention of such monies."

"The state having received the money without right and having retained and used it, is bound to make the party good, just as an individual would be under like circumstances. The obligation to refund money received and retained without right implies and carried with it the right to interest," the apex court had said in the 2014 order.
